Last night I attended a dinner hosted by the Center for the American
Experiment, a state based conservative think tank. Keynote speakers of
the past include Mikhail Gorbachev, Colin Powell, and Margaret
Thatcher. Four star General Tommy Franks, former commander of CENTCOM
and key planner of both Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi
Freedom spoke last evening. I'm not certain of what I expected from
the native southerner but it certainly was not the product he
delivered. He was charismatic, well spoken, humorous, and just so
natural. He played the ultra-conservative audience perfectly in his
description of the decision to continue the War on Terror in Iraq. He
defended Secretary of State Don Rumsfield. He expressed his disdain
for politics but explained why the military must accept the reality of
the political world. He promised that GWB would be revered by the
world in fifty years. He criticized the way in which church and state
have been so violently pulled apart.
The man would make the perfect politician. Rumors of a Presidential
campaign have run through various local circles. But of course his
name is marked by his connection with that little war over in that big
sandbox. He told us to blame him for what has gone wrong, he's quick
to accept the blame and seems honest enough to earn my initial trust.
But a politician is a politician which means that you can never take a
single word at face value. But I did get my picture taken with him
just in case.
I am moving tonight. It will be fun! Do you think if I tell myself
enough times it will come true? Moving is never fun. It makes me
realize that I own at least $30,000 in clothing and accessories, which
is rather depressing.
